The Januaries

Hi all. I am so sorry I haven’t been posting much at all since the holidays. I seem to have come down with a pretty ferocious case of the Januaries.

Don’t get me wrong, the holidays were just wonderful. It is my favorite time of year to spend with family and friends. The bûche was a tremendous success too, by the way! I still need to share that with you along with my New Years resolutions and a couple of 2010 recaps I’ve been working on.

I think it’s no more serious than being hit in the face with a major drought of winter inspiration. I’m trying to get back into my groove by cooking a lot, working on the apartment and getting back into wedding plans.

I promise I’ll be back in top form soon and I hope you’ll bear with me while I get there.

In the meantime, any of you out there feeling this way too? What are your favorite ways to remedy the Januaries?

sounds like you just got hit with SAD, or seasonal depression. I get that every year, and bringing in fresh flowers, fresh food, and making sure to get some sunshine every day seems to help.

Sleepovers with girlfriends are always good remedies—hanging out, but staying in. It’s a custom that shouldn’t be relegated just to adolescence and out of town trips (especially not that we’re older and don’t have to sneak over booze…not that I EVER did that).

    TYPO!
Especially NOW that we’re older and don’t have to sneak over booze.
Delicious comfort food is also wonderful medicine—and it goes down a lot more easily.

Yes, been there! Enjoy yourself, and the creativity and inspiration will come back. I read something about creativity having peaks and valleys, so this lull will make you even better :)

last year I was having a particularly difficult time, I had just been laid off right before Thanksgiving and had decided not to fly home to see family over the holidays. In an attempt to focus on the positive things that were happening in my life, I decided to make a list of my 10 favorite moments from the previous year – instead of making new year’s resolutions (which I was never any good at keeping anyhow). Last year my list included weekly Sunday morning trips to the farmers market with my husband as well as things like wedding dress shopping with my sister in Chicago. As I reflected on my list I began to notice how it truly reflected what was important to me – time with friends and family, etc. and this helped give me a better perspective for the new year. After the success last year, I’ve decided to make it a new tradition and so I am still working on my favorite moments of 2010. Here’s to the new year!

i meant to ask about the buche. i’m not usually one for therapeutic pampering, but a spa/sauna day in the middle of winter is always nice. last year we went here:

and it was awesome until we had to re-emerge into the bitter, bitter cold.

I call them the Winter Blues and I am feeling it…the Carribean is calling my name!

I’ve definitely been having trouble getting back into a routine, and my creative juices have Not been flowing. All of these tips sound great, I’m going to try them out. I think getting back into a workout routine will help too. Yoga especially, but really anything to get the blood pumping always seems to kickstart great ideas for me.

La- I just had a sleepover at a friends this weekend and it absolutely the most fun! I can’t believe it’s been years since I’ve done it.

Cliché, but taking it one day at a time, one project at a time has helped me during this time of year. I wish you the best in regaining your creative spirit. Maybe it took a break to allow you to get some rest, gear up for the new year. It’ll be back soon enough and I can’t wait to see what you post in 2011!
