astronaut72Giant Leap

I’m back from the Thansgiving holiday and it was so great. I did absolutely nothing of substance (unless you count watching many back episodes of America’s Next Top Model substantial) and it was exactly I needed.

Here is one of my latest discoveries.

Taschen is very well known for creating iconic books that measure up in stature to the famous figures chronicled within. Their latest effort sets the bar a little higher. MoonFire celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing with Norman Mailer’s text, new photos, historical documents and Buzz Aldrin’s autograph too!

The result is equal parts historical document and art piece.

With its steep price tag ($1500) and limited edition of 1969 copies (the year of the moon landing) I probably won’t ever get my hands on a copy. Still, I am so impressed by the stature of the book that–like the great wide open of space–I just like knowing it’s out there.

the grade 72Carefully Constructed Flavor

I don’t by any means consider myself to be a wine expert. I do love the stuff and am definitely an amateur afficianado. I love discovering new wines that offer up something new for the palate and I feel like The Grade, a Napa Valley cult-favorite does just that.

The Grade was created in 2004 by architect Tom Thornton and real-estate developer Brenda Mixson. The New York couple fell in love with the land during a business trip to Napa and the dream to make wine there was born instantly.

After years of selling their grapes to several notable vineyards, they decided it was high time to enjoy the fruits of their labor and started bottling their own wine.

And what a wine it is. In true California Cabernet fashion this wine is all about bold fruit. The flavor is layered and complex like the great creative minds behind it.

The coolest thing about The Grade is that you won’t find it many places. Thornton and Mixson keep distribution limited which has garnered a special following. Consider it a great holiday gift for your favorite wine afficianado. He’ll be so impressed by your discovery and will happily share a glass with you!

sub studioSoulmates

Andy’s second installment of his Creative Couples series is up today on The Strange Attractor!

The series explores the personal & professional relationships of couples living and working together in the design industry.

Today’s post focuses on Sean and Anna of multi-disciplinary design group Sub-Studio and their fabulous blog.

I have been a fan of Sean and Anna’s work for a long time and I particularly love Anna’s latest jewelry collection for Brevity.

Aptly named the Horo Collection (for the French word for clock horologe), pendant necklaces capture clock hands frozen in time.

Read the full Creative Couples post on Sean and Anna right here.

tengaFive Favorites: Charles and Marie

For my second installment of Five Favorites I am focusing on one of my favorite go-to websites for cool gifts.

Charles and Marie is a carefully curated shop that features designy items from across the globe. It was difficult to narrow things down to my top 5 but I did prevail, here are my picks:

Tengu/Tengu Allstar $40

This USB-connected pal lip-synchs along with whatever music you’ve got playing. Comes with customizable stickiers too. Perfect for your karaoke duet partner.

Deer Vase $70

Great for a nature lover or your favorite hipster, flowers create tromp l’oeil antlers in this sweet, wall-mounted deer vase

Crystal Carafe $55

I’ve always loved this piece, the heavy glass of the carafe is playfully contrasted by the colorful plastic cups. Water carafes are such classy gifts to give too!

Desk Tidy $32

This is a great desk accessory because it has so much personality. Perfect for someone with a 9-to-5 or a sweet touch in a home-office.

Walls Notebook $17

Great for a graffiti artiste or someone with a serious knack for scribbling, this notebook features pages of blank New York City walls. It’s a prime canvas for working out your inspirations before taking on a real wall.

fox72Things That Are Fantastic

So, as my title and drawing would suggest, I saw Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox this weekend. And yes, it was wonderful!

The movie feels like a storybook from my childhood that has been brought to life. All of Anderson’s terrific flourishes are there in abundance. Perhaps animation is an even better medium for him to stage the highly detailed scenes that he is famous for.

One of my favorite details of course, was the clothing. Each tiny character is perfectly dressed in adorable outfits that are just as stylishly indie as Gwyneth Paltrow in the Royal Tennenbaums. Anderson even has a suit made from the same corduroy as Mr. Fox in the film.

Speaking of great clothes, I scored a pretty fabulous “stylishly indie” piece myself at this weekend’s Steven Alan sample sale. The Tippi Coat, my new favorite piece in my closet has all the same classic simplicity that I admired on the characters in the movie. I salivated over it for full price but was a good girl and stopped myself from making the purchase.

It is sure to be a piece I will wear for many years and I must say, I do feel quite foxy in it!

lucky plaid 72Room/Outfit + The Lucky Shopping Experience

What a week this was! Guest-blogging for Lucky Magazine deserves nothing less than a gold star.

The support from you readers has been overwhelming and I can’t tell you how happy it makes me that people out there are enjoying this little project of mine.

Another benefit of this week is my new discovery of the Lucky Shopping Experience.  This is a new click-to-buy facet on Lucky’s website that is not only shoppable, it is curated by the Lucky team. When I type in something as basic as “silk blouse” the search pulls choices that have been pre-selected by Lucky. It’s like shopping online with your very own stylist.

Needless to say, I got a little carried away….

Today’s room is a plaid wonderland (because I just can’t get enough plaid these days) and the outfit is created entirely through the Lucky Shopping Experience. I went for pieces that were preppy and feminine with a little bit of an edge. (those See by Chloe boots!!) Hope you enjoy!

Listen to this. As I was walking home this evening I was passed on the street by none other than Grace Coddington. Seriously, her shoulder brushed against mine I think.

I was completely star-struck, it was as if time stopped.

Today in my guest post for Lucky Right Now I talked about my love of walking outside in New York in the winter and my favorite fashionable boot choices for the season.

I love walking outside so much because of all of the unexpected and somewhat magical things you encounter on the city streets. Seeing Grace was one of those magical, fleeting New York moments. How very fitting that it should happen the same day as this post.

phillip-lowCrystal Clear

I just adore these prismatic sculptures by artist Phillip Low.

Prisms reflect light into a spectrum of colors but these pieces while similar in shape, embody color instead of reflecting it.

The effect is magical and architectural all at once, like the vision of Zaha Hadid brought to life by a wizard or sorcerer from the future.

What’s more, I also love the photographs of the pieces featured on the Maryam Nassir Zadeh website. In them the photographer manages to make the work appear two-dimensional which for me makes it even more modern and cool.

The sculptures are for sale at Maryam Nasir Zadeh in New York. The boutique/gallery is also printing a small run of posters of select photographs from the series. I’ve already called to reserve mine.
