What I Wish I Wore (in Mexico)

You all know how I love to make packing lists for all of my trips big or small. I probably shouldn’t admit that I’m on about the fifth draft of my list for our trip to Mexico (next week!!)–give me a break folks, a girl’s got to get through her ride on the subway somehow.

In my list-making I’ve realized something: my clothes are boring.

When you think about dressing for vacation you want to whip out the hot pink, pull on the prints and generally flash and dazzle. The problem is, I have no hot pink, my prints are pretty much all stripes and there is nary a sparkle in my closet.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the way I dress. I think working in New York has made my closet more stylish but also more subdued. I am obviously not going to revamp my entire wardrobe for a quick trip but you can’t blame me for entertaining the idea of it. There are so many great Spring clothes showing up in the stores for Spring, here’s what I wish I could wear for sipping a margarita by the pool.

Clockwise from top left: Urban Outfitters Straw Floppy Hat; Vince Hi Low Metallic Sweater (via Bloomingdales); Sass & Bide The Fable Short (via Shopbop); Super Lucia Sunglasses (via Gargyle); Issa Silk Maxi Dress (via Net-a-Porter); Jil Sander Multi-Color Wedge Sandals (via Saks)–I want everything from this collection!!

What I Wish I Wore Today

Navigating the slush trenches on my way to work today I passed a woman on the street who’s ensemble really turned my head.

Her outfit consisted of layered tones of grey, camel and ivory, it was something fresh and clean against the bleak backdrop of the day.

I loved the combo and thought about how I would switch it up to make it my own. Here’s my spin on layered neutrals with a bold Tavi-inspired dye job to boot!

What I wish I wore today, it certainly beats my wool coat and duck boot uniform!

Look: All clothing from LaGarconne. Clockwise from top left: Vanessa Bruno Athé Petit Hobo; Topshop Grey Marl Opaque Tight; Proenza Schouler Suede Short; Manic Panic Atomic Turquoise Hair Dye (via Amazon); Vanessa Bruno Wool & Silk Jersey Top (need!); Rachel Comey Miner Boot

Ps. I’m trying to loosen up a bit with my illustrations. I want them to feel a little bit more like fast sketches. Hope you’ll bear with me while I flex my style muscles a bit!

What I Wish I Wore Today

Everybody get your best Oprah announcer voice ready and say it out loud with me: Ittttttttttt’s wiiiiiiiiiiin-ter!

Or it feels like it anyway. I don’t know if it is the heating in the new apartment or the sudden drop in temperature but I just can’t get warm.

So I am dreaming about the coziest outfit ever: Shearling-lined clog boots and cable-knit sweater leggings topped off with a nubby cocoon coat. Top it off with an amythest slouchy beret and my favorite, red lipstick.

I think I’ll wish I were wearing this all winter!

What I Wish I Wore Today

Whenever the seasons change, without fail I go through a very ill-favored frumpy phase while adjusting myself to dressing for the weather. Both days this week I have made an effort to be fashionable and au courant and both times have ended up looking like a total slob.

My closet must be laughing at me.

So, I have decided that a new dress would be the answer to my transitional dressing woes. (At least until next week, right?)

I love this slouchy sweatshirt style from Cacharel, it would look so cozy and cute with a pair of printed ballet flats and a wool cloche!

Right now Fall dressing isn’t about a lot of accessories or bells and whistles. Just a few pieces with the right proportions and you’re good to go!

What I Wish I Wore Today

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that the denim vest is the must-have piece for summer dressing.

I love the way it looks with a feminine dress and a pair of smart shoes.

Wish I was wearing one today with this beautiful sundress from No. 6 (love that store), a pair of loafers and a snappy little mini-backpack. Wouldn’t that be so cute & cool in the hot weather?

There’s no doubt about it, shorts are officially the only thing you should be wearing this summer.

I’ve been a hardcore fan of sporting shorts since my days at summer camp and I love this trend. The only problem is, with so many great styles, how do you choose!

I’m really feeling for this zip-front, pleated number from VPL. I’d wear them with an unbuttoned utility shirt over a blouson crop top and sky-high espadrilles.

It’s the perfect look for the summer heat that has been blasting down on us. Wish I was wearing it right now!

What I Wish I Wore Today

Ah Spring, why are you always such a bad flirt! After last weekend’s teasing weather, this week’s rain feels like an affront to my senses.

Still, I’ve got springtime dressing on the brain. Perhaps in part because of the recent launch of Cole Rood & Haan, a new line from the accessories giant featuring super fine leathers and a handmade, craftsman-like quality.

I am a particular fan of the Breezer, a refined take on the classic boat shoe.

I’d style mine to look perfectly French with this Provencal-print skirt, a crisp men’s button down shirt (to reflect some of the androgyny in the shoes) and a bright red sash to catch springtime’s eye, mais oui.

What I Wish I Wore Today

I’ve been afraid to say it for fear of jinxing things and bringing another blizzard upon us but I think it might finally be safe: spring has sprung!

With it comes a whole slew of new wardrobe options (bring on the bare legs!) and there has been one item in particular that I can’t seem to stop swooning over.

The Double Pocket Coat by Opening Ceremony is the perfect Spring jacket. I loooove the slouchy shape and skinny lapels.  I’d be sure to wear this with everything I own and especially my favorite outfit of a striped shirt, high waisted jeans and colorful heels.

With the sun and crisp breeze coming at me through the window, I wish I were wearing this today!

What I Wish I Wore Today

I think I’d call today a triple whammy. I’ve been sick all week and it keeps getting worse instead of better, we are supposed to fly to Portland tonight and, there is a blizzard outside my window.

Days like this make you want to put on the coziest outfit you can find and pull the covers over your head but, sometimes you just can’t do that.

I have been obsessing over these Rag & Bone combat boots for weeks now. I love the rounded toe, tapered ankle and cone heel, they look like the kind of shoes you could wear everywhere all the time.

On a day like today I’d have a bit more pep in my step if I could throw them on. I’d pair with a cool, slouchy cardigan and a pair of jeggings (yes, a day like today calls for jeggings) it would be the perfect look to fend off sickness, travel stress and snow!

What I Wish I Wore Today: Great Shoes

You can wear just about anything with a great pair of shoes.

They look good with everything from party dresses to pencil skirts to your ratty boyfriend jeans. Fact is, great shoes make your clothes look better.

Speaking of great shoes, I am currently coveting the Quilted Viva Bootie from LA cool-girl boutique Tenoversix. I’d sport these with a pair of shorts from the new Levis Cords by Opening Ceremony collection (love!) layered over wooly tights and a mensy workshirt/vest combo. Basic pieces take a very sartorial turn with a great pair of shoes.

Wish I was wearing some now…
